Thanks to its connection with the Mekong River, Tonle Sap is one of the rare rivers in the world whose flow changes direction. During our boat tour, we will observe closely the communities living on the lake. Tens of thousands of families living around the lake have made their living for centuries from fishing and aquatic trade. Traditional houses built on stilts in the region are raised on high legs to adapt to seasonal water levels. In addition, there are floating houses, primary schools, small shops, and even floating clinics on the lake. Tonle Sap alone accounts for approximately 75% of Cambodia’s freshwater fishery and is the country’s largest food source.
