This traditional performance, staged entirely without musical instruments and accompanied only by the rhythmic voices and chants of a male chorus, tells episodes from the Ramayana epic and the story of the monkey chant. Guided by the storyteller called the dalang, the dancers’ movements begin slowly and gradually accelerate with the rhythm, creating a ritualistic trance-like atmosphere.
